ONGOING BOOK SALE DONATION DAYS EXPANDED

The Friends of the Manchester District Library are expanding Donation Days, held for their Ongoing Book Sale on the second floor of the library. Previously, the group only held Donation Days a few times a year because of storage space, but now people may bring their book donations to the Village Room on the lower floor of the Library/City Office Building on the SECOND SATURDAY of each month, between 10 a.m. and noon. These donation days will be held during the months of MARCH through OCTOBER.

Our first Donation Day of 2011 will be MARCH 12, and we will be accepting books that are in good condition. Please remember that we do NOT accept magazines or textbooks.

We also invite new members; the organization does not ask for dues but just for participation in our projects to help the library. So please pick up a membership application at the front desk and join us in supporting the Manchester District Library.

September Donation Day

The Friends’ next donation day will be Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010 from 10am-1pm.

You’re welcome to bring your donations of books, DVDs, audio books, etc. to the Village Room on that day (park in the back parking lot). Donations will either be used in the Friends book sale or recycled/discarded.

Thank you for your support! If you haven’t yet visited the Friends book sale on the second floor of the library, please stop by! The book sale area is beautifully maintained by Friends volunteers and there’s always something new to browse.

Spring Student Art Show

The Friends are sponsoring the refreshments at tomorrow night’s Spring Student Art Exhibit Opening!

Every spring, the library throws open its doors for the friends, families, and fans of our most talented high school art students. Art students at MHS work all year on their projects, and teacher Angelina Watson picks the very best of their efforts for display in the spring art show.

This year’s grand opening will be Friday, May 14 from 6-8pm, with live music performed by high school band members. It’s always a great turnout and a fun party. Everyone is welcome!

This year the Friends have taken the extra step of sourcing biodegradable plates, cups, and utensils. You won’t be adding to the landfill this year if you attend! Used plates, cups, etc. will be composted instead of thrown away.

The Friends will be taking donations on Saturday, March 27 from 11am-1pm in the Village Room at 912 City Rd., Manchester (map). Use the rear parking lot.

As usual, we ask that you recycle magazines, text books, encyclopedias, or anything musty or smelly — just bring us the good stuff! To help with storage restrictions, please limit your donations to 1 box or bag per family.

The Friends book sale is located on the 2nd floor of the library, right across from the elevator. Payment is by donation. Proceeds are used to help pay for library programs (like the Summer Reading Program) and special collection needs.

Donation Days Postponed!

The ongoing booksale has been so successful that we have discontinued Donation Days for awhile–our overflow shelves are overflowing! Thanks to everyone for your generous donations–we’ll let everyone know when we start up again.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month, so stop by and see the display.

April is National Poetry Month, National Library Week (12th-18th), and Earth Day (April 22)!

April may bring showers, but it also brings many celebrations! An exciting part of National Poetry Month is the second annual ”Poem in Your Pocket” day–April 30, 2009. Everyone is encouraged to choose a favorite poem to carry with them and read to friends, family–even perhaps at the Coffee Mill! Song lyrics can count as poetry too, so be thinking of your favorite poem–from Shel Silverstein to Shakespeare, Dr. Seuss to T.S. Eliot, Mother Goose to Emily Dickinson Plato once said: Poetry is nearer to vital truth than history. And Walt Whitman pointed out: To have great poets there must be great audiences, too.

So welcome to April–and celebrate poetry, your library and our Earth! Meanwhile, enjoy our ongoing booksale on the 2nd floor and remember the next donation day, SATURDAY, APRIL 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Village Room.

Friends Ongoing Booksale Now Open!

Everyone is invited to come to the second floor of the library to see the permanent Friends Book Sale area! The first picture on the left shows Sue LaRocque, Michelle Stace, and Patty Swaney unloading book donations in the Village Room on our first Donation Day, Saturday, January 17. The second photo shows Sue, Michelle, and Julia Strimer getting started on the second floor area, and finally Kelly Brewer and Patty Swaney are putting the books in place.

We’re very excited about this different method of selling books! Sue’s husband, Jacques LaRocque, has made a great Donation Box, which will be attached to the side of the shelves closest to the stairs. Suggested donations are:

$.50 for videos, children’s books, and paperbacks

$1.00 for regular hardcover books

$2.00 for better condition hardcovers and video collections

So come right up the stairs back by the children’s section, or take the elevator–the Book Sale area is directly across from the second floor elevator. We hope you enjoy the selection, and do remember that Donation Days are on the

THIRD SATURDAY OF THE MONTH

10 A.M. TO 2 P.M. IN THE VILLAGE ROOM.

Please do NOT ask staff to take donations at any other time; we just don’t have the storage room, since they are busy with their jobs. Also, we do not accept encyclopedias, textbooks, Readers Digest condensed books, or magazines. We appreciate your contribution of books, VHS tapes, or DVD’s which are in good condition. The Donation Days coming up will be:

FEBRUARY 21, MARCH 21, APRIL 18, MAY 16

We will evaluate the success of this type of book sale at the end of May, so we hope you will support and enjoy this new effort of the Friends to support the Manchester District Library. All of our funds are available to the Library Director for use as needed.

Friends Ongoing Book Sale On Its Way!

We just finished our Dec. 10 meeting, and Heather showed us the area at the top of the stairs across from the elevator which will be the “Friends Corner”. Everyone is excited about preparing for our Ongoing Book Sale. Donations of books will be taken on the THIRD SATURDAY OF EACH MONTH, starting JANUARY 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Village Room on the lower level of the building. Please remember that we CANNOT accept encyclopedias, magazines, Reader’s Digest books, or any books in poor condition. The book sale shelves will be directly across from the elevator on the second floor of the library, and payment will be placed in a donation box. The suggested donations will be $.50 for paperbacks and $1.00 for hardcover, with a $3 section for newer hardcover editions.

The Friends will be meeting on December 10 at 6 pm on the second floor of the library, just outside the elevators. We’ll be discussing the new permanent booksale area and sharing some refreshments–so come along if you’re interested.

We also have a new theme up for December–SNOWFLAKES! The exhibit centers on the works of Kenneth Libbrecht and Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley, both of whom photographed these tiny crystals of beauty. Check out their work online. Libbrecht is head of the Physics Department at Caltech; his snow work is at www.snowcrystals.com . Bentley, who lived in the late 1800′s, is at www.snowflakebentley.com .

Our new officers and plans, September 2008

The Friends group met on September 24, 2008; the officers for the coming year are President, Julia Strimer; Secretary, Kelly Brewer, and Treasurer, Sue LaRocque. Our meetings for the coming year will be on the SECOND WEDNESDAY of December, March, and June (DECEMBER 10, MARCH 11, and JUNE 10). The Annual Membership Meeting will be held SEPTEMBER 9, 2009. All members and those interested in membership are invited, so mark your calendars

We have now purchased a display stand to mark monthly observances, starting with November, which is American Indian/Alaska Native Heritage Month. Heather Sturm and her staff have gathered an excellent assortment of books on this theme and have placed them in the display bookshelf just on the left as you enter the library. The upcoming theme for December and January will be “Snowflakes”. February marks African-American History Month, and March is Women’s History month.

We’re looking forward to an ONGOING BOOK SALE; Heather has located a space on the second floor right across from the elevators, and we will be discussing this new sale method at the December 10 meeting. The plans are to have a Book Donation Day every THIRD Saturday of the month between 10 A.M. and 2 P.M. Volunteers would be present to sort the books immediately and put them on the sale shelves. We will set the first Donation Saturday at the December Meeting.
